ACTIVE HOUSING

Active house opened in Århus
In April 2009 the first active house in Denmark was opened by Minister of Economic Affairs and Trade, Lene Espersen. The house is situated in Lystrup, close to Århus, and is designed as a plus energy house, introduced as “Home for Life”.

Home for Life is initiated and financed by VKR Holding and implemented by the subsidaries VELFAC and VELUX. They have together with aart architechts and Esbensen created a house, in which it is nice to live, it is eco-friendly and without energy expenses.

Esbensen has contributed to the development and planning of the energy solutions. The fundamental principle is that the house produces more energy that it consumes, hence the term plus energy.

Solar cells, solar heating and heat pumps produce electricity, hot water and room heating. App. 50% of the room heating requirements is covered by the passive solar heat from the energy optimised windows. Natural and mechnical ventilation combined with inside and outside solar screening ensures fresh air and a good temperature. Intelligent control of the house reduceres the energy consumption and ensures a good indoor climate.

A test family spends a year in the house. They have now moved in and live their life in the house.

Systematic process

The growing demands for energy efficient buildings, a desire to think of the building lifecycle and the increased focus on sustainability makes it important for architects and engineers to cooperate in a team. The teamwork should be an integrated process and result in architecture, interior and engineering to be one optimized a solution. This is exactly what the Integrated Energy Design (IED) process contributes to.
